The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust, founded in 1976 by Romulus Whitaker. It is located 40 km south of Chennai city east coast road with the Bay of Bengal. The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust (MCBT) is a reptile zoo and herpetology research station. It was established with the aim of saving three Indian endangered species of crocodile - the marsh or mugger crocodile- Crocodylus paluster, the saltwater crocodile- Crocodylus porosus, and the gharial- Gavialis gangeticus. Over the years, the Crocodile Bank has supplied to zoos with crocodiles, crocodile eggs, snakes, water monitor lizards, iguanas for breeding programs and for exhibits. They deals with snakes also. Besides crocodilians, the Bank maintains 12 specials types of turtles and tortoises, five specials types of snakes, including the King Cobra, Ophiophagus hannah, water monitor lizards, Varanus salvator salvator, two specials types of pythons and albino cobras.
Visitors to the Crocodile Bank include school and colleges, locals, families and foreign tourists, besides amateur and professional herpetologists from within India and overseas.. The have extracting of snake venom to the visitors is a great attraction and it also helps the Irulas, the tribe of snake catchers, to earn a living. This Crocodile Bank have several species of Indian and African crocodiles and alligators. They provides shelter to about 5,000 species of crocodiles, which are kept in open pools. They can be viewed from a safe distance they living with naturals environment.
The Crocodile Bank in Chennai is a great getaway for people who want to visit and enjoy about this huge reptile. It is strategically located as it is on the way to Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry.
